This trip does it all! Kayak at a glacier, photograph bears, see an authentic "bush" village, seek out whales, fly past a volcano, take a sled dog ride, and even go fishing if you like! A photographers dream and a great choice for families!
Depart Homer, Alaska on a scenic boat cruise to Hideaway Cove Wilderness Lodge. Located within Kachemak Bay State Park, the lodge is only accessible by water- this is your home for the next 5 nights! After an orientation, embark on a guided glacier tour, hiking and kayaking in a magnificent glacier valley behind the lodge. Hike through 3 distinct ecosystems, then continue your journey with a short paddle trip along the lakeshore, among icebergs of all sizes. Lucky guests may even see a piece of ice “calve” off into the water! Return to the lodge in the afternoon. In the evening, you are served a delicious meal with a splash of rustic elegance, then off to relax on the sea-side deck, walk the rocky shorelines, or unwind in the wood-fired sauna.
After your home-cooked breakfast, experience the ambiance and charm of the quaint community of Halibut Cove. An historic and cultural tour, hear the stories of this magical corner of Alaska as you leisurely paddle your stable sea kayak along sea cliffs and sea caves watching for otters, seals, and black bears foraging on the shoreline. Your tour takes you past a working oyster farm then into the historic “bush” community of Halibut Cove. Accessible only by water, you will be awed not only by the beauty, but also by the tenacity of the locals who live and work in this remote Alaska bush village. Return to the lodge in the afternoon for relaxing, a short hike, or take out the row boat and do some fishing!
Experience an epic wildlife safari into Katmai National Park, where you are guaranteed to see bears! This fully-guided tour includes a one-hour “bush plane” ride past volcanoes and over glaciers, then landing on a remote lake in Katmai National Park. Your experienced guide leads you to a prime viewing area overlooking Alaska brown bears fishing and frolicking in the river. If you have ever wanted to be on National Geographic, today is your day! Arrive back to the lodge in the evening and share your stories over a delicious evening meal.
Guests choose either a half-day of guided sport-fishing for halibut, or a “trolley tour” of the museums and art galleries in the sea-side town of Homer, Alaska. Hear colorful stories from your sourdough driver as you hop on and off at various locations on this self-guided walking/trolley tour. Museum and trolley fares are included.
A "free day" at Hideaway Cove Wilderness Lodge. This day is a perfect day to relax, recharge, take in a short beach walk, photograph the wildflowers in the glacier valley, hike into the alpine tundra above the Lodge, or take out a row boat and go fishing. Guests can also book an additional guided activity such as a coastal birding tour, wildlife photo tour, guided sport-fishing, or a fly-in / hike-out excursion.
After breakfast, say good-bye to Hideaway Cove Wilderness Lodge and enjoy an escorted drive on a nationally-designated scenic by-way, arriving in Seward, Alaska, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. In the afternoon, visit the sled dog kennel of Iditarod Champion Mitch Seavey. See how an Iditarod champion sled dog team is trained and cared for. You even get to ride behind a sled dog team through the wilderness on the team’s training course! Your time concludes with a tour of the kennel where you meet the dogs and cuddle the cutest puppies. This evening is spent in a comfortable hotel in the seaside town of Seward, Alaska.
Have your cameras charged up for a fully-narrated wildlife and glacier cruise into The Kenai Fjords National Park. The Park boasts whales, abundant sea mammals, and more than 80 species of birds! Midway through the tour, you have lunch at the face of a mammoth tidewater glacier, watching icebergs crash into the sea. Return to Seward in the afternoon and board the historic Alaska Railroad for a scenic backcountry train tour back to Anchorage. Train arrives anchorage at 10:15pm. Depart Homer, Alaska at 6pm and enjoy scenic boat cruise across Kachemak Bay. Hideaway Cove Lodge, located within the boundaries of Kachemak Bay State Park, is your home for the next three nights! Watch for otters, puffins, as we motor to the secluded sea coast lodge. After a lodge orientation and tour of the grounds, there is still plenty of daylight to explore! Take in a short hike, explore the rocky shoreline, take out a row boat, watch for wildlife on the sea side deck, or simply relax in the privacy of your own quaint Alaska log cabin.
After a home-cooked breakfast in the lodge, enjoy a full-day guided glacier tour. A 2-mile hike through a coastal forest behind the lodge brings us to a pristine glacier-lake. After the hike, paddle a stable sea kayak around mammoth icebergs and along the rugged shores of the lake. Explore and photograph the virgin landscape at the face of the glacier while learning first-hand about the incredible power of moving ice. In the afternoon, hike back to Hideaway Cove Lodge and relax. Enjoy a hearty dinner at the lodge, served with a splash of elegance. Evening options include walking the rocky shoreline, relaxing in the lodge, unwind in the wood-fired sauna, or chat around a campfire.
After a relaxing breakfast, embark on a tour of historic Halibut Cove. This casual tour includes walking and paddling. You will be awestruck by the beauty and history of this remote corner of Alaska. Snow-capped mountains, sea cliffs, sea caves and marine wildlife are all enjoyed from the comfort of your stable sea kayak. In addition to the kayaking, you will go beach combing on a remote pebble beach, and also visit the eclectic and picturesque “bush” community of Halibut Cove. After the tour, return to the lodge for relaxing or a short hike. Your delicious evening meal may include grilled sockeye salmon, local side-striped shrimp, blackened Halibut, or sautéed Alaska scallops.
Experience the thrill of riding on a “bush plane” past volcanoes and over glaciers to Katmai National Park, where you are guaranteed to see bears! This full-day epic wildlife safari includes a one-hour scenic flight to a remote lake in Katmai National Park.
